The Department of Commerce at Khariar (Autonomous) College Khariar is committed to providing quality education in commerce and management, equipping students with strong academic knowledge as well as practical skills required in the modern business environment. The department is headed by Mr. Harnam Singh, who holds M.Com. and B.Ed. qualifications and has successfully cleared the UGC NET five times. He is also currently pursuing an MBA to further strengthen his academic and professional expertise. With more than five years of teaching experience, he brings a dynamic and student-centric approach to the department. His areas of specialization include Accounts, Taxation, Financial Management, and Entrepreneurship, and he plays a key role in shaping both the academic and professional development of students.

The department is further strengthened by experienced and dedicated faculty members. Mrs. Starupa Pattnaik, who holds M.Com. and M.Phil., has been serving the institution for more than ten years. She specializes in Business Mathematics, Accounts, and Management, and is widely appreciated for her systematic teaching methodology and academic guidance. Another valued member of the department is Ms. Sangeeta Meher, who holds M.Com. and has qualified UGC NET. Her areas of specialization include Marketing and Business Management, and she actively contributes to building students’ understanding of contemporary business practices.

The Department of Commerce offers academic programmes at both higher secondary and undergraduate levels. At the +2 level, the department provides 128 seats, enabling a large number of students to pursue commerce education. At the undergraduate level, it offers the +3 B.Com Accounting Honours programme with an intake capacity of 64 seats in each semester, following the structure prescribed under NEP Course-2020. The curriculum is designed to meet modern educational standards while ensuring practical relevance and career readiness.

Looking ahead, the department is committed to academic expansion and innovation. From the upcoming academic session 2026–27, the Department of Commerce plans to introduce the AEDP course, further enhancing skill-based and career-oriented learning opportunities for students.
