The Department of Economics at Khariar Autonomous College has been an important academic unit since its establishment in 1977, the same year the college itself was founded. Over the decades, the department has played a vital role in promoting economic literacy, analytical reasoning, and social awareness among students of the region. Located in a semi-urban part of Odisha, the department has consistently worked to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world economic issues, especially those relevant to rural development, agriculture, employment, and regional planning. Its steady academic presence reflects the broader mission of the institution—to provide accessible and quality higher education to students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds.
At present, the department offers a three-year undergraduate programme leading to the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Economics, with an annual intake capacity of 24 students. This limited intake ensures a focused learning environment where teachers can give individual attention and mentorship to learners. The curriculum is designed to provide a strong foundation in microeconomics, macroeconomics, statistics, public finance, and development economics, along with exposure to contemporary economic issues. Students are encouraged to participate in seminars, assignments, and discussions that enhance their analytical and presentation skills, preparing them for higher studies, competitive examinations, and careers in teaching, administration, banking, and research.
The department is currently led by Gunabanta Sahu, who serves as the Head of the Department and oversees academic planning, teaching coordination, and student guidance. He is supported by dedicated faculty members Mousam Kumar Pradhan and Bisikeshan Nayak, who contribute actively to classroom teaching, mentoring, and academic activities. Together, the faculty strive to maintain a supportive academic atmosphere that encourages curiosity, disciplined study, and intellectual growth. Their collective efforts ensure that students not only grasp theoretical concepts but also learn to apply economic reasoning to real-life problems and policy discussions.
Academically, the department functions within the regulatory and affiliating framework of Kalahandi University and operates under the recognition of the University Grants Commission, which ensures adherence to national standards of higher education. As part of an autonomous institution, the department also benefits from curricular flexibility, allowing it to adapt teaching methods and evaluation practices to evolving educational needs. Through its consistent academic engagement, committed faculty, and structured programme, the Department of Economics at Khariar Autonomous College continues to contribute meaningfully to higher education in western Odisha while shaping students into informed, responsible, and analytically skilled citizens.
